The challenges of taking a picture of my not quite two year old in a dress? Nothing says SPIN SPIN SPIN like a dress. It’s sweet and fun and endlessly frustrating when trying to take a picture. This week for the Valentines theme on Project Run and Play I sewed up a version of the Paper Fan dress (free pattern yay!). I found this pattern after visiting Nest Full of Eggs. Check it out: the great fabric makes it easier to spot all the great features of this dress!
The only catch of the free pattern? It only sized down to a 2T. I’ve learned the hard way she is tall enough for a 2T, but she is just too narrow. She drowns in them. So I did some resizing. I’m pretty happy with it. I’ll bring the shoulder in a little more I think.
I had a little bit of trouble with the fabric. I assumed the hearts were suppose to run straight up and down. I squared everything up, and my hearts ran at an obviously very unintentional wonky diagonal. I had to do some shifting and rearranging to get the pattern straightened out and everything back on grain.
I like the soft pink on her. It suits her personality, even if it doesn’t do a great job of showing off all the pleats in there! I cheated the waistband a little. I didn’t use accent fabrics so I just attached the bodice to the skirt without the paper bag waistband effect in the pattern.
This was a lot of pink for us. She was temporarily blinded, though maybe that was just the headband.
The front is box pleats and there is a row of knife pleats in the back below the closure. I’m digging this pattern. The bodice is fully lined. I used a vintage looking floral print for the lining.
The back crosses over and buttons. I used a couple delicate little white buttons I had in my stash. I moved my button placement from the original pattern she ran around all day and the far side of the dress didn’t sag, so in the smallest size the far left button doesn’t seem to make or break it.
And then we were DONE. Her brother tried to “share” her moose. I’m excited to have found this pattern! Are you sewing up Valentines inspired outfits this week?

With Sofie I get about 5 minutes and I don’t stop clicking. Then I look through to see what’s salvageable. They are very hard to photograph at this age!!! I love the dress, thanks for the pattern link. Your little girl is absolutely precious.

Isn’t that the truth! I do have a continuous shoot but the exposure isn’t great on them. It is crazy how many pic.s you take to get a couple good ones!
Great job on the dress and resizing! She really is a cutie.
Thank you Sally!
Looks like another pattern we must try for our 2 year old niece…..love the pleat details! And we are so with you on trying to capture a good picture!!

To make it worse it is freezing and snowing here- it will be easier to get pictures when were back outside, but yikes right! I would recommend that pattern, I was really impressed with especially for a free download.
i’ll have to check out the pattern..I have a skinny short 3 year old, so I think the 2T may be perfect. Nice job!
My first was a pretty big dude, so fitting a sknny minny is a new challenge for me. It takes a different sizing tech. for sure!
The dress is lovely! The soft pink is a great color on your cutie. And sweet, fun and FRUSTRATING about taking toddler’s picture? SO TRUE!

Thank you! At least all the picture taking means there will be some good pic.s in the memory book!
That shade of pink is perfect with her complexion! Very pretty dress.:) I have the pattern on that constantly-growing-longer to-sew list of mine…

I totally feel your toddler-picture-taking pain! They won’t sit still haha. But they’re so cute in the outfits so it’s worth it even for some blurry pics. I just bought a bit of this fabric for some valentine’s projects and now I’m thinking maybe a skirt or dress. Great job!

Agreed!
A super cute little dress. I love back neckline and closure, combined with the pleats.
She’s adorable!!

What a darling dress and adorable little model!
I love the “blur” of the first picture – it’s hard to get any kid to stay still
This is an adorable dress. Great job! Thanks for linking up to the weekly creative.

You did a great job! I love all the pink!
You did an awesome job. It looks like something that can be done by others.
I too make dresses for my kids, but lately I have been making my little girl’s dress. I get you with taking photos of your kids, but luckily I have kids that do like their photos taken sometimes. LOL! My little 14months old girl likes her pictures taken, but you must let her see photo first before she lets you take another shot. Cute! And speaking of cute, your little princess is.
I can totally relate to issues getting an almost 2 year old to stand still for just one good picture. My youngest will be 2 next week. I love the dress and you did great sizing it down. Looks perfect on her. Thanks for sharing on We Made That!
It’s very pretty! You did a great job!
