Small Fry Skinny Jeans: Pattern Parcel Tour #4

We broke out the denim and a pattern we’ve heard a ton about to make up an amazing pair of shorts this week.

The Small Fry Jeans by Titchy Threads is part of the the Perfect Pattern Parcel #4, which is now available.  Are you as excited as we are these are BOY patterns?  As we near the end of summer, we get ready for school to start.  In Minnesota the thermometer still reads 85-90 degrees!  So I decided to sew up the Skinny Jeans shorts version.

Truth be told the first pair I made were jeans, but when we went to try them on O, it turned out he is not exactly the skinny jeans type.  So they have been put on the side for when M gets tall enough.shorts 1When I cut the shorts, I did widen the leg a little bit so it would give O some movement in the thigh area, an easy adjustment we’ve had to make for him before.  O is built more like a weight lifting football player.  Pretty solid.

I LOVE the way this pattern sews up.  I made both of these with a half fly.  It looks real but no zipper or functionality involved.  This is perfect for now, because even if O wears pants with a functioning fly, he never opens the zipper.  Why put in all that energy if he just pulls them off anyway?

These jeans have many mix and match options.  It comes in two lengths and you can choose to do patch pockets or the traditional jean pocket with attached coin pocket.shorts 2

I put traditional pockets on the front.  I really like the look.  I made these in a dark denim that Rachel picked up at the fabric warehouse.  I must admit it is some of the nicest denim I have ever worked with.  It is a heavyweight, but still pressed very well when making flat felled seams.  The directions and tips for sewing flat felled seams are great, so don’t be intimidated if you have never used this seam finish.shorts 3

The Perfect Pattern Parcel is an opportunity to support the Indie Designers and also help support a charity.  Part of the funds received will  help students in K-12 in minimizing educational inequities by providing tools and experiences necessary for an excellent education.  You can choose the level for which you pay for these great patterns and there is an option for donating to receive the bonus pattern.  That is 6 in total!  A great deal and all these patterns are superb boy patterns.

I chose to embellish O’s with some T-Rex fabric. He spent his afternoon showing off the T-Rex strength it gave him and of course his two T-Rex claws!

Have you ever sewn jeans? What’s your best tip for working with denim?

Happy sewing, Donna

  1. I love the skinny fit on him! I’m impressed by the seams, wow. I’m not sure if I have this pattern or not. I know I have the 2t which was a free release…but I might have it. I’m really impressed by the seams. I think I’d try it with a stretchy denim. I don’t see many boys jeans with stretch…but I’d do it anyways because we have a couple linebackers too:) love these shorts, the pocket is awesome!

  2. These look great! The widened look for the shorts is great and I love the cuffed style too! Doesn’t it feel great to sew up a pair of pants with a fly and waistband? I always feel so accomplished.

  3. Your jeans look fantastic. I love the waistband lining and the T-rex you added to the back pocket. Your son looks really happy with them too.
