One Last KCWC Project- Exposed Zipper Jumper

It’s Sunday we made it through Kid’s Clothes week! Did you get your whole list checked off? I didn’t, but I knew I had over committed. I’m excited I got SOME of it done! I’ve decided the next couple weeks are going to be dedicated to little boy pants, so I shifted my list a bit.

SimplicityThis jumper is Simplicity 2484. I used the pattern pieces read the instructions and promptly decided I would do it my way…

The pattern is designed to have a seam down the center front and center back. Now I knew I wasn’t going to follow their exposed zipper instructions. So I cut my front piece on the fold. I did put the seam down the back. I really wish I hadn’t.

If you have a pattern (like the heart) it is really distracting because nothing lines up. If I did this with a solid or a corduroy I may include the seams.

Exposed Zipper

I Googled a number of ways to place an exposed zipper in. The one I found that was SUPER easy and fast (my favorite things) was on See Kate Sew. You can find it HERE

Now my zipper foot was MIA…so this one will need a little reinforcing and prettying up when I replace it. But it works for now! I hadn’t originally intended on leaving that bottom zig zag exposed, but I unfolded my fabric after I cut my piece and found a defect/whole in the fabric. I was so angry until I realized it may land right under my zipper! Lucky! But I need a little extra length so you’re getting the whole exposed zipper experience on this one!

SimplicityCan you see the pockets? I think they have potential to be really cute. I actually put these in according to directions. I think with a solid it would be really cute to do that topstitch with a double needle, maybe in an accent color?

They Said it Would Fit

So I put this together based on measurements I had written down while she was napping- I should have known better.

SimplicityI chopped a solid 2-3 inches off the length. (I should have known better) And while the back was hitting her right the front was pulling all kinds of funny. So I ended up pulling the front jumper up, and reserging the shoulder seams. Of course I wasn’t really hot on the idea of pulling off all this binding and doing it again. I improvised a little accent to contain the seam at the shoulder (you can see it in the first picture).

Overall I like the base of the pattern. I look forward to tweaking it into a basic that I love!

What do you think about the exposed zipper? It was my first try? I won’t be offended if you don’t like it- that has been the general feedback so far!! I think I’m ok with it, but not giddy to do it again. Though man they are easy to put in!

I know what you mean about lining up fabric like the hearts. I try to avoid it… LOL!!! It’s absolutely gorgeous fabric and is teamed perfectly with the black binding. Honest opinion re the exposed zip… I’d like it better if the bottom was hidden, but you’ve explained that was your original intent and it’s good to experiment.

I agree Pam, I would tuck the end if I did it again. I just didn’t want to loose all that yardage for a fabric flaw (grrrr) I also think I’ve decided after thinking on it more, I wouldn’t put another one in the front. I think maybe it’s too much?

I’ve never seen an exposed zipper on an outfit before. Very different – I might have to try that myself sometime!!

Thanks for linking to a Round Tuit!
Hope you have a fabulous week!

I think in the right place they are fun- even if the verdict is still out on this one!

I love this! The fabric is great, and I have been loving exposed zippers. I’ve been seeing them a lot lately. I co-host a weekly link party that runs from Tuesday to Thursday. I would love for you to link this up, if you have time. Have a great week!
